IBM i Migrate While Active

An IBM Redbooks residency (PW-FS03-R01)

Description

This residency will explore the capabilities of IBM I Migrate While Active. Clients running IBM i workloads are often faced with situations that require workloads to be moved from one system to another with as little interruption of service as possible. IBM i Migrate While Active is a feature that allows you to migrate an IBM i LPAR to a different location without any downtime. This can be done within the same server, the same data center, or to a remote location such as IBM Power Virtual Server in IBM Cloud. IBM i Migrate While Active builds upon the continuous availability technology of IBM Db2® Mirror for I and is optimized for migrations where a physical tape cannot be used for a traditional D-Mode IPL and restore. It handles the save to optical media so a network install may be performed. Migrate While Active can be used to achieve a wide variety of business needs: 1. Migrate an on-premises IBM i from a local data center to IBM Power® Virtual Server. The production node is moving to the IBM cloud. 2. Migrate an on-premises IBM i from a local data center to any IBM i cloud provider. The production node is moving to a cloud provider. 3. Migrate an on-premises IBM i to a newer and more advanced Power system. The production node is moving to new hardware within the same data center. 4. Migrate an IBM i for the purpose of creating a clone. The production node remains intact and is merely used as the master source of the copy node. These and many other use cases are made possible with Migrate While Active.

    Benefits to Resident

This residency offers a valuable opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of a new IBM i function for migrating workloads between systems. This enhanced expertise will position residents as trusted advisors to their employers or clients, enabling them to effectively plan and execute migrations of critical workloads, whether to another on-premises server or to the cloud. Furthermore, the residency provides a platform for building new professional connections with fellow IT specialists in the field.

In recognition of the knowledge, experience, and accomplishments gained, participants who successfully contribute to the IBM Redbooks publication produced during this residency will be awarded an IBM Redbooks Digital Badge through Credly.

    Resident Prerequistes

A basic requirement for all residents is the ability to read and clearly express concepts and procedures in common English.

This remote residency requires no travel. Residents are expected to participate in regularly scheduled online meetings, typically twice a week for up to an hour, to collaborate on the IBM Redbook publication. The first week may involve additional meetings to discuss topics and outline the book. Due to the residents' global locations, these meetings may occur outside of normal working hours.

In addition to meetings, each resident should dedicate up to twenty hours per week to researching assigned topics and writing content for the publication. This research and writing time can be scheduled at the resident's convenience.
