Abstract

IBM i is a robust and integrated operating system developed by IBM. It currently is one of the operating systems that runs on IBM Power Systems servers. IBM i is known for its strong emphasis on stability, security, and business-critical applications. IBM i provides a unique architecture that combines a database, middleware, and operating system into a single, cohesive environment, simplifying IT management and reducing total cost of ownership. It is a vital platform for many businesses, particularly those requiring highly reliable and scalable solutions, and continues to be modernized to incorporate current technologies like cloud integration and open-source capabilities.

This IBM Redbooks publication provides a technical overview of the features, functions, and enhancements available in IBM i 7.6. It provides a summary and brief explanation of the many capabilities and functions in the operating system. It also describes many of the licensed programs and application development tools that are associated with IBM i.

IBM i has always focused on security and IBM i 7.6 has several new features to increase security of your IBM i LPARs. One of the major components introduced in IBM i 7.6 is built-in support for support for Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) in the operating system. In previous releases, there were external solutions (for example PowerSC) that provided MFA, but in IBM i 7.6 support for MFA is included in the operating system. IBM i 7.6 also includes additional support for encryption, allowing encryption of ASP1.

The information provided in this book is useful for clients, IBM Business Partners, and IBM service professionals who are involved with planning, supporting, upgrading, and implementing IBM i 7.6 solutions.
