Implementing, Tuning, and Optimizing Containerized Workloads with Cloud Pak for Data and Red Hat OpenShift

An IBM Redbooks residency (PW-C101-R01)

Description

The goal of the residency is to develop a reference guide for implementing, monitoring, and tuning workloads in a containerized multicloud Power Systems environment with Red Hat OpenShift and IBM Cloud Pak for Data using theoretical knowledge, hands-on exercises, and documenting the findings by way of sample scenarios. Note: Many of the topics and scenarios to be researched, tested, and documented are brainstormed prior to the start of the residency and during the first few days of the residency with the residency team, technical focal points, and solutions teams. This book addresses topics for IT architects, IT specialists, Technical Sellers, Systems Architects, Developers, Brand Specialists, and anyone looking for a reference guide on how to implement, monitor, and manage containerized workloads on-premises and in the Cloud with Red Hat OpenShift, IBM Cloud Pak for Data on IBM Power Systems. Moreover, this publication provides documentation to transfer the how-to-skills to the technical teams, and solution guidance to the sales team. This book compliments the documentation available at IBM Documentation and aligns with the educational materials provided by IBM Systems Technical Training.

    Benefits to Resident

This is a great opportunity to participate in the IBM Redbooks Residency Program and use available resources to collaborate and co-create the implementing containerized workloads with IBM Cloud Pak for Data and Red Hat OpenShift on-premises and in the hybrid Cloud on IBM Power Systems.

The residency team collaborates with the technical focal points, product managers, and peers to gather ideas, get hands-on experiences while developing a guide with case studies to show how to implement, deploy, and monitor containerized workloads on Red Hat OpenShift and IBM Cloud Pak for Data on IBM Power Systems.

After these 6 weeks experience (refer to the residency timetable), the residents will refresh skills, gain new skills on monitoring applications (Istana, Turbonomics, Watson AIOP, and others), Red Hat OpenShift, Power Systems, IBM Power Virtual Server, IBM Cloud Pak for Data, and many more solutions enabling them to provide a leading role on Technical Sales, implementation, and support.

    ===>>>>> Residency Program Timetable <<<<======

This residency begins on August 29, 2022, and ends October 7, 2022 (6 weeks, please see schedule below). The residency is running hybrid (best effort) with the following format:

For 6 weeks (August 29, 2022, through October 7, 2022) - The residents will work from their respective countries.

Note: Best effort. Business priorities can take precedence.

    Additional Notes:

+ Dialogue with your management team to gain approval before applying for this residency. Refer to the residency timetable for specific project dates.

+ You must be flexible in your start and end dates as these may change.

IBM Redbooks want technical practitioners to be recognized for their newly gained knowledge, experience, and accomplishments. Therefore, upon successful delivery of the publication produced by this IBM Redbooks residency, you will become eligible to earn an IBM Redbooks Digital Badge issued through Credly.

    Objectives

The residency will utilize any available documentation, hardware, and software resources to (this is not a comprehensive list):

+ Design, test, and document implementation techniques case scenarios with containerized workloads running on Red Hat OpenShift and IBM Cloud Pak for Data in hybrid multicloud environments with IBM Power Systems.

+ Document sizing guidelines to help provide an optimal system configuration and implementation.

+ Experiment migration scenarios for workloads currently running on older generations of Power Systems servers on newer generation of Power Systems servers running on-premises or in the Cloud.

+ Instrument and monitor workloads utilizing Istana, Watson AIOP, and other solutions.

+ Help develop and document best practices on how to journey workloads and the transition of workloads to the Cloud.

+ Provide guidance to the Technical Sales teams about the solution.

+ Provide feedback to the development teams on current features, behaviors and wish list features that can be developed in upcoming releases.

+ Host a webinar to educate the teams on the lessons learned during the residency.

Note: The document highlights the current available security offerings for containerized workloads supported on Red Hat OpenShift for IBM Power Systems including best practices.

    Resident Prerequistes

A basic requirement for all residents is the ability to read and clearly express concepts and procedures in common English.

    Technical Skills Required:

NOTE: You won't match one-to-one all the necessary technical prerequisites, but the combined residency team will collectively bring the skills required for the project. Please provide as much detail of your technical expertise and experiences with the solution.

The selected residents will bring the following (combined) technical skills to the residency:

+ Knowledge and experiences with Multi Cloud and Hybrid Cloud Solutions

+ Experiences with IBM Cloud including IBM Power Virtual Server

+ Experiences with Red Hat OpenShift

+ Experiences working with Containers and Kubernetes

+ Experiences IBM Power Systems installation, management including virtualization features
